Tai Chi as Energy Healing


Tai Chi is a great way for Baby-Boomers to stay flexible as they age.

According to the Energy Arts website, “There are five main styles: the Yang, Wu, Chen, Hao and combination styles.

I am most familiar with Taoist Tai Chi®. According to Tai Chi Central, “One style which stands alone is the so-called “Taoist Tai Chi” invented by the late Moy Lin Shin (Lin Shin Moy) of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This style is not generally recognized as an authentic style of Tai Chi, but it is notable due to its popularity in many non-Chinese countries, especially in Canada.

Moy is known to have briefly studied Yang Style Tai Chi in Vancouver between 1969 and 1970 before moving to Toronto and developing his own style. Over the next several years he modified the style with an emphasis on stretching, twisting and deep knee bends.”

Taoist Tai Chi encompasses a series of 108 moves that are taught in ‘pieces’ or chunks during a 3 – 4 month season. By the end of the season, a practitioner can follow the whole sequence.


My Experience with Taoist Tai Chi

The first time I ever saw Taoist Tai Chi being practiced was on the television news. The reporter was featuring a group of mostly elderly, Asian practitioners of Tai Chi in a park at the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. I just thought it was so ‘pretty’ and ‘elegant.’ I wanted to find out more.

I found out that there was a local group of Taoist Tai Chi and that it was fairly affordable. No special equipment is required – just good indoor shoes and comfortable clothing for moving and stretching while doing the sequences. The group was a mix of elderly Japanese, Chinese, Taiwanese and Caucasians ranging in ages from their thirties to eighties.

I practiced Taoist Tai Chi for about three years. I really enjoyed it. I found it very helpful and beneficial as a gentle form of exercise as I was wracked with pain and stiffness of fibromyalgia. I really noticed an improvement in flexibility and balance over the couple of years that I went. Another lady said her lung capacity greatly improved from doing tai chi.

I quit going when I woke up one morning and couldn’t lift my arm, it had nothing to do with Taoist Tai Chi, but it was so painful and took a few years to really heal. It’s still not fully healed and I can feel the pain if I’ve slept wrong overnight. Also, they had consolidated and moved all the tai chi locations out in the eastern part of town and it wasn’t all that convenient to either ride the bus or find parking if I took the car.

I miss doing Taoist Tai Chi and all the great instructors and classmates. Some of my classmates have gone on to be instructors, and most of my favourite instructors have retired. The good news is that tai chi has gone back to a variety of locations disbursed throughout town; I should be able to find a time and location that is convenient for me.

Whether you think ‘energy healing’ is all a bunch of hokum, there is a lot of scientific evidence that goes back several decades, even centuries that point to energy within and all around us. Think Nikola Tesla, quantum physics, or even going back to ancient wisdom teachings and theology or religion.

Some energy modalities are easy to learn and some are more complicated. Some can be self-administered and others are generally administered by a certified practitioner. Some are fairly inexpensive; others cost a lot of money either for training or receiving the treatment. It’s up to you to seek out and see which one(s) works for you.

Disclaimer: Certain ideas about energy healing really resonate with me, but yet, when I tried them I didn’t get the results that others were getting, therefore I cannot and will not say that any one modality is the end-all, be-all. (Please consult your own health care provider to find out what is best for you.)

I will explain to you my understanding and my practices, but I know from trial and error that what works for me may or may not work for you…
