Energy Modalities – R
Welcome to Thriving-Baby-Boomers – A Whole person approach to wellness
“Empowering others to take a balanced approach to their own health and wellness by focusing on all aspects of the whole person.’
“Focusing on the whole person to maximize health and wellness for life.”
Energy Modalities that begin with R
A couple of energy healing modalities that begin with ‘R’ that I’ve experienced are Reflexology and Reiki. Read my experiences below.
The practice and purpose of Reflexology goes deeper than just a good foot massage of the skin and muscles. Reflexology takes specific reflex points on the foot to induce a healing response in corresponding organs and areas of the body, see chart below.
A few of the many small, intense movements you’ll experience during a reflexology treatment are:
- Kneading the soft fleshy ball of the foot,
- pulling on the toes,
- tracing around the heel and
- pushing deep into the arch
According to reflexology, if sensitivity or tenderness is experienced when certain areas of the foot are stimulated, it usually indicates bodily weaknesses or imbalances within the corresponding organ. With repeated practice of applying pressure and manipulating nerve endings (traditionally in the foot), reflexology can help to clear any channels of blocked energy through moving the flow of blood, nutrients and nerve impulses to ultimately improve overall health and balance. In addition to manipulating the pressure points on the foot, reflexologists sometimes work on the hands or ears to trigger relaxation as well.

My Experience with Reflexology
I’ve only had one practitioner do reflexology on me. Due to my over-sensitivity to anything and everything as a result of fibromyalgia, I definitely need a practitioner use a lighter touch than they may normally use on other clients. I definitely enjoy this time of healing and relaxation.
According to Wikipedia, “Reiki is a form of alternative medicine developed in 1922 by Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui. Since originating in Japan, Reiki has been adapted into varying cultural traditions across the world. Reiki practitioners use a technique called palm healing or hands-on healing through which a “universal energy” is allegedly transferred through the palms of the practitioner to the patient in order to encourage emotional or physical healing.
The earliest recorded English usage dates to 1975.”
Reiki is a technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It’s administered by laying on hands and can be easily learned by anyone.
According to an article posted on the University of Minnesota, “Reiki does not involve physical manipulation or the ingestion or application of any substances, but works with the subtle vibrational field thought to surround and penetrate the body.”
Reiki treatment is usually facilitated by light, non-manipulative touch to a clothed recipient. You can get Reiki treatments from a either a professional or a friend who has been trained, or you can learn to give yourself Reiki treatment as a daily wellness practice.”
The above-mentioned article says, “No special background or credentials are needed to receive training. One of the hallmarks of Reiki practice is its simplicity: it can be learned in about ten hours of in-person training, generally offered in group class formats, and doesn’t require knowledge of either subtle bio-energy or healthcare… You can only learn Reiki from a qualified Reiki master…. There are three ‘degrees’ of Reiki training, first degree, second degree, and Master. Only Reiki masters can teach Reiki to others.”
My Experiences with Reiki
I’ve only had a couple of sessions of Reiki. My daughter has level II and a friend of mine is a Master/Teacher. In each session I have felt the energy being run through their hands and over my fully-clothed body (quite similar to Healing Touch which I wrote about earlier). I find Reiki relaxing, and after doing this little bit of research, I may just add it to my goals to be trained in, at least the first degree, so that I can do some self-healing.
Whether you think ‘energy healing’ is all a bunch of hokum, there is a lot of scientific evidence that goes back several decades, even centuries that point to energy within and all around us. Think Nikola Tesla, quantum physics, or even going back to ancient wisdom teachings and theology or religion.
Some energy modalities are easy to learn and some are more complicated. Some can be self-administered and others are generally administered by a certified practitioner. Some are fairly inexpensive; others cost a lot of money either for training or receiving the treatment. It’s up to you to seek out and see which one(s) work for you.
Disclaimer: Certain ideas about energy healing really resonate with me, but yet, when I tried them I didn’t get the results that others were getting, therefore I cannot and will not say that any one modality is the end-all, be-all. (Please consult your own health care provider to find out what is best for you.)
I will explain to you my understanding and my practices, but I know from trial and error that what works for me may or may not work for you…
