Book Review – The Gifts of Imperfection

November 25, 2020

Renowned Best-Selling Author, researcher and storyteller, Brené Brown’s New York Times Bestseller, The Gifts of Imperfection offers the reader guidance on accepting one’s self – warts and all. Ms. Brown Encourages one to let go of seeking outside validation and keeping up with others to develop self-acceptance and self-confidence.

The Gifts of Imperfection by Brené Brown

Grounded in research and psychology, Ms. Brown presents questions for the reader to contemplate their own issues and beliefs on many themes ranging from: Courage, Compassion and Connection; Love, Belonging and Being Enough and things that get in the way of living a life of Authenticity. Brené offers chapters on how to cultivate self-compassion, a resilient spirit, intuition, and faith through daily practice of Gratitude and Joy.

I really enjoyed Ms. Brown’s use of questions for the reader to contemplate and her concept of DIG DEEP that she uses throughout her presentation of the different concepts. She says that “Men and women who live Wholeheartedly do indeed DIG DEEP… when they are exhausted and overwhelmed they get:

Deliberate in their thoughts and behaviours through prayer, meditation, or simply setting their intentions;

Inspired to make new and different choices;

Going. They take action.

Ms. Brown offers real-world examples from her life and the lives of others on roadblocks and how to overcome them and move forward using the DIG DEEP tools.

I’ve read this book twice, and feel I’m ready for a re-read to refresh my memories and implement more of these tools as I move forward into the New Year.

I highly recommend it for anyone who feels stuck in their or others’ expectations of what their life ‘should’ be.
