Sex Manuals for Baby-Boomers

When I talk about sex manuals for Baby-Boomers, I’m not talking about Playboy and Hustler. I’m talking about real, genuine informative manuals that help enhance intimacy between partners, and also manuals regarding self-pleasure.

I guess the first sex manual I ever saw was More Joy of Sex: A Lovemaking Companion to The Joy of Sex (Complete and unabridged illustrated edition) edited by Alex Comfort, M.B., Ph.D. It not only covers lots of sexual positions in pencil drawing; it also covers such things as communication and body language, the history of sexuality and marriage, families, self-esteem and the fear of rejection. This sex manual could be considered an introductory manual for a younger generation.

The Complete Kama Sutra: The First Unabridged Modern Translation of the Classic Indian Text by Alain Daniélou (Translator). I’ve heard many people talk about the Kama Sutra being full of ‘dirty’ pictures – of all different kinds of ‘kinky’ sexual positions, but this edition doesn’t even have any pictures. This edition of the Kama Sutra goes into much more than just sexual positions. As Wikipedia says,

“Contrary to popular perception, especially in the western world, the Kama Sutra is not just an exclusive sex manual; it presents itself as a guide to a virtuous and gracious living that discusses the nature of love, family life and other aspects pertaining to pleasure-oriented faculties of human life.[4][5]  The Kama Sutra is the oldest and most notable of a group of texts known generically as Kama Shastra.”

I really enjoyed reading the Kama Sutra – more than once even – because it is ‘a guide to a virtuous and gracious living.’ It talked about doing things in a pleasure-oriented, sacred manner, and that is how I choose to live my life – with or without an intimate partner in my life.

Making Love Better than Ever: reaching new highs of passion and pleasure after 40 by Barbara Keesling, Ph.D. What I really loved about Ms. Keesling’s book was the intimacy exercises she shared throughout the book to help couples slow down, take their time and really get to know their partner and what gives them pleasure. She suggests a certain length of time for these intimacy exercises and then suggests the partners switch and the other be the giver or receiver – whichever the opposite role they just had. Ms. Keesling also touches on sexual difficulties such as premature ejaculation to inability to gain or keep an erection; to vaginal dryness for women. Most of all she writes about respect and awareness of self and partner.

Although I wouldn’t classify Sex: if I didn’t laugh, I’d cry by Jess Lair, Ph.D. as a sex manual, I highly recommend this book. I came across Jess Lair in the late eighties, and early nineties. He’s a very easy read. It’s like sitting across the kitchen table, or sitting in the living room listening to an old friend. This book was so powerful for me because he described sexual intimacy as similar to gluing two boards together. And I really got the visual when he talked about ending a sexual relationship and moving on to another – whether, from sequential monogamy or one-night stands, each has an effect similar to ripping those glued boards apart. Each board will be missing some of its fibre and will have some of the other board’s fibre still attached. Thus the image of leaving holes in one’s soul.
