Weight Maintenance for Baby-Boomers

Weight maintenance isn’t all about weight loss, it’s more about increasing health and vitality through nutrition rather than diet, and deprivation.

Weight reduction and weight maintenance are something that has been a challenge for me all my life. Even as a young girl I have been overweight. I know that most of my excess weight has been a result of emotional eating.

One of my earliest experiences of emotional eating is sitting on the kitchen floor eating raw rice right out of the box. I know it was because I was missing my mom after my dad divorced her and took custody of my brother and me. I might have been about 4 or 5 years old when this occurred

Diets Don’t Work for Weight Maintenance

I know dieting doesn’t work as a form of weight reduction. I have been off and on diets since I was about 9 years old.

I have tried so many diets off and on over my lifetime: the Atkins diet, the grapefruit diet, the cabbage soup diet, the Ultra-Metabolism Diet, the 17-Day Diet, wearing a black garbage bag to ‘sweat’ it off, starvation diets, the Master Cleanse, ad infinitum!!!!!

I had a little bit of success with the Ultra-Metabolism and 17-Day Diets regarding weight maintenance, both of which make the most sense to me.

I use the Master Cleanse as a way to kick start myself and my body back into shape after a winter of too many carbs. I have done at least once a year for the last 5 or so years – anywhere from 3 – 21 days. I always am amazed at how well I feel and how much energy I have while on the Master Cleanse!

I’m not, never have been, a very physically active person, but I’m getting to the point of actually liking walking. No special skills or equipment is necessary. I do notice some weight reduction when I’m consistently active.

Jon Gabriel has an interesting perspective about weight loss – one’s body has a built-in safety mechanism to retain weight as a safety feature. If you don’t feel safe, you won’t lose weight no matter how much dieting and exercise you do. His Gabriel Method’ book and online support is one of the best I’ve seen for the money. He has some great downloadable guided visualizations to use first thing in the morning and at bedtime.

He doesn’t focus on dieting at all in his book, it’s more about increasing ‘good stuff’ and slowly the less-than-ideal stuff will disappear on its own as it’s replaced with healthier foods and behaviours. Jon’s premise that we can attain our natural ideal weight effortlessly and easily once we believe and visualize ourselves as naturally thin seems to be the best form of weight maintenance that I’ve ever come across.
