Diabetic Clinic Experience
In less than a week in March of 2017 I had lab work done, saw the ladies at the diabetic clinic, saw my doctor and went to the dentist for six-month check up and cleaning.
I did NOT like the ladies at the diabetic clinic. I felt like they talked down to me like I was a five-year old. It felt like they had a ‘script,’ but I guess, more accurately, they have a check-list of questions to ask.
My daughter had taken her step-daughter to see them a few years prior and told me they will suggest what we refer to as ‘crap-in-a-can’ – low-fat, diet pop, low fat/low sugar, pre-made, packaged products. (I basically make most all my food from scratch. I rarely have pre-made, canned, or packaged foods in my house.) So I wasn’t looking forward to this appointment.
They didn’t tell me to eat these products because I already listed all the home-made foods I eat.
My Low-Carb Food List
- Eggs – omelettes, hard boiled eggs in salads, or egg salad for lunch
- Steamed Vegetables (I eat a lot of mono-meals, where I just steam one or two veggies, no meat, no starch)
- I eat lots of spinach, broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, asparagus, carrots, onions, mushrooms, garlic and ginger
- Green Smoothie – avocado, spinach, vanilla, stevia & coconut milk
- Chocolate Avocado Smoothie – cocoa powder, avocado, coconut milk, vanilla, stevia & ice cubes
- Skinny Shake – cocoa, ice cubes, a touch of stevia, & coconut milk
- Meat, a little bit, not very much – mostly chicken and shrimp, occasionally I eat a bit of beef or pork steak
- Yogurt and Berries
- Nuts & Seeds

I also told the ladies I don’t drink alcohol, and rarely drink pop.
But I was really pissed that they had the gall to tell me that despite the great results – 23.8 lbs. weight loss, and getting the Blood Glucose in near-perfect range they suggested that I was too low in my carbs and that I need to increase them to the Recommended Canada Food Guide of forty-five percent (45%) daily consumption!
I told my doctor that I didn’t much like these ladies at the diabetes clinic and he told me I never had to go back!! YEAH!!
I am not an expert on anyone’s health besides my own, and after a lifetime of trial and error I can only share what is working, or not, for me. There is no one size fits all when it comes to health and ideal body size and shape. Each one is free to experiment on what works for them.
