Walking For Baby-Boomers
I’m sure we’ve all been told all our lives how good walking is for us and it is cheap and easy. No special equipment required.
I never much liked walking just for the sake of walking, and because it was good for me, but over the years I have come to really enjoy walking – just for the sake of walking.
For the most part, I am a fair-weather walker; I don’t like getting chilled, so it has to be nice and warm for me to be out walking. Therefore, in the cooler, wetter and wintery weather I will walk using a treadmill at my local Y. Two years ago I couldn’t even climb up onto the treadmill, and then very slowly I could walk for a few minutes, and now I can walk twenty or thirty minutes at a time.
In the winter of 2017 – 2018, I found I’d been able to walk more frequently, up to about minus 10 Celsius. After that, I find it just too cold and hard for me to ever warm up, even if I climb into a hot bathtub as soon as I get home.
I have a couple of favourite routes I enjoy walking. One is on the North Shore, River’s Trail along the banks of the Thompson River. It’s a well-maintained, flat, paved path. I have really enjoyed the better part of a year walking this route and enjoying the changing seasons; watching the birds (seagulls, Canada Geese, Bald Eagles, ducks & crows), and looking for wildlife like deer and squirrels. I love to walk this path around dusk and catch beautiful sunsets and majestic colours in the sky. My other favourite walk is downtown at a different point of the River’s Trail that connects Riverside Park to Pioneer Park. I generally walk this route only a few times a month when I’m dropping off and picking up my daughter from appointments.
Both of these areas, and even another route that I walk, along Schubert Drive by the meeting of the waters of North and South Thompson Rivers, they are all relatively flat.
I feel blessed for having such beautiful parks and trails that are so well-maintained for people of all ages and abilities to be able to enjoy here in our fine city.
Sometimes we find ‘surprises’ along the way like the faces in the trees in the above picture. There are several similar carvings in Riverside Park as well as this one along Rivers Trail in North Kamloops.
