QiGong For Baby-Boomers

QiGong is an ancient Chinese form of meditation and exercise that is the foundation for a lot of martial arts, including Tai Chi, another of my favourite forms of gentle exercise.

The Qigong Institute says that ‘Qigong (“chee-gong”) is an over five-thousand-year-old Chinese health method that combines slow graceful movements with mental concentration and breathing to increase and balance a person’s vital energy… Literally millions of people practice Qigong in China and around the world each day to successfully treat diseases ranging from osteoarthritis to cancer, to improve their overall health.’ They say, ‘Qigong is a Mind and body wellness practice integrating Movement, Posture, Breathing, and Awareness in Moving Meditation for prevention of illness, maintaining and enhancing function, reducing stress, managing chronic conditions, increasing longevity, and promoting healthy, active aging.’

I discovered Qigong online through YouTube videos and I eventually ordered two videos from Lee Holden one called 7 Minutes of Magic offering an a.m. and p.m. routine and a gentler one for health, the other called QiGong for Weight Loss which has standing and floor exercises. At this time I can only do the standing exercises. Qigong is another form of physical activity that I love and don’t do often enough.

During the winter of 2017-2018, I started to do the beginners set from QiGong for Weight Loss, including the floor exercises. Still not as often or consistently enough for any major benefit, but I continue to re-set my health and exercise goals and strive for improvement day-by-day, week-by-week.
