Book Review – The Secret

New York Times bestseller, The Secret by Rhonda Byrne is based on the wildly popular movie of the same name. I have a beautiful hardcover edition from 2006.

The Secret by Rhonda Byrne

The Secret brings forth ancient wisdom that has been suppressed over time. Ms. Byrne starts the book with a quote cited from The Emerald Tablet, circa 3000 BC which says, “As above, so below. As within, so without.”

This quote reminds me of a passage from the Bible in the book of Matthew 6:7-13 where Matthew talks about ‘prayer warriors’ and instructs his audience on the best way to pray, stating:

7-13 “The world is full of so-called prayer warriors who are prayer-ignorant. They’re full of formulas and programs and advice, peddling techniques for getting what you want from God. Don’t fall for that nonsense. This is your Father you are dealing with, and he knows better than you what you need. With a God like this loving you, you can pray very simply. Like this:

Our Father in heaven,
Reveal who you are.
Set the world right;
Do what’s best—
as above, so below.

Keep us alive with three square meals.
Keep us forgiven with you and forgiving others.
Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil.
You’re in charge!
You can do anything you want!
You’re ablaze in beauty!
    Yes. Yes. Yes.

This premise of “As above, so below, As within, so without’ is that there is only ONE – no separation between the physical and the mental, no difference between human beings and Nature, no separation between ‘god’ and ‘man.’

The Secret is based on Ms. Byrne’s journey researching the ancient wisdom secrets of life by ‘tracing The Secret back through history,’ studying ‘the greatest people in history: Plato, Shakespeare, Newton, Hugo, Beethoven, Lincoln, Emerson, Edison, & Einstein.’ She followed up this research by interviewing ‘fifty-five of the greatest teachers across the United States’ for the movie of the same name. Twenty-four of these teachers are featured in the book.

You will recognize many of their names: Bob Proctor, Dr. Joe Vitale, John Assaraf, Dr. John Demartini, Dr. Denis Waitley, Michael Bernard Beckwith, Jack Canfield, Mike Dooley, Lisa Nichols, Marci Shimoff and others.

The Secret, is revealing the Law of Attraction and how to use your mind and personal ‘energy’ (vibration) to attract all that you desire into your life. Basically, the Law of Attraction says, ‘like attracts like.’ The premise is that this Law can be used to transform every area of one’s life: “financial, physical healing, mental, emotional, relationships and more.

The Secret reveals many spiritual tools that have helped others manifest their desires: Gratitude, Vision Boards, Meditation and more.

John Assaraff’s story about manifesting the house of his dreams – five years after he first created his Vision Board with a picture of his dream house on it was inspiring to me. It showed that The Secret doesn’t immediately ‘answer one’s prayers,’ and that there’s a lag time between our desires and the manifestation. This lag time depends on one’s beliefs and consciousness and what other ‘stuff’ is going on in their life.

I find both the book and movie very magical and inspiring. Both are ‘keepers’ in my library.
