Book Review – The Power of Your Subconscious Mind
I first read The Power of Your Subconscious Mind by Dr. Joseph Murphy back in the mid-‘90s. The publishers’ disclaimer says, “Written in 1963, this book is a reference work based on research by the author…”
Dr. Murphy writes that ‘the subconscious mind cannot reason like your conscious mind,’ yet he posits that ‘what is impressed in the subconscious mind is expressed.’ (realized, appears – made manifest.) This book is all about ‘how to get the subconscious to work for you…’
I’ve been a ‘truth seeker,’ and interested in Self Improvement since the mid-80s. I’ve read and heard so many people say, ‘change your thinking, change your life,’ but it’s just not that easy!! All the affirmations in the world are not enough to change one’s thinking; one also has to change their beliefs.
Dr. Joseph Murphy makes some great suggestions to break through the mind’s natural resistance to change. One example that I found valuable is, rather than saying, “I AM… thin, fit, firm, flexible & toned,” when one is obese and stiff and sore with arthritis, the mind’s natural reaction is to resist this new information because it doesn’t align with what one’s ‘reality,’ or experience is. Dr. Murphy suggests cutting out the “I AM…” and just go straight to “thin, fit, firm, flexible and toned,” therefore there is nothing to contradict the mind’s position.
Dr. Murphy’s book cites Biblical examples of healing in ancient times, Emerson’s teachings, Bernheim’s experiments, Baudoin’s teachings and many examples of spontaneous healing throughout history.
Dr. Murphy writes about the power of suggestion, prayer, gratitude, thank-you, visualization, and imprinting one’s mind before sleep to awaken with the answer to one’s problems as well as many other helpful techniques to activate the power of your subconscious mind.
Dr. Murphy discussed various Laws of the Universe: the Law of Belief, the Law of Reversed Effort, and many others.
The book covers all aspects of being a human being: healing Relationships, Wealth, Success, Health and more.
The Power of Your Subconscious Mind is meant to be read and studied over and over. I re-read this book every few years and fine-tune my implementation of various principles listed.
I highly recommend this book – it can be transformative – if you regularly practice these fundamentals.
