Vibration Machines For Baby-Boomers

A Vibration Machine is my absolute FAVORITE exercise machine!! Other names it’s called are a whole-body vibration (WBV) machine, or a vibration platform, or Power Plate. According to WebMD, they are an outgrowth of a program used to train Russian cosmonauts. Vibration machines are in the ‘passive exercise category.’

The explosion of this new exercise trend has outpaced the scientific and medical research. But the medical community is studying the benefits. Currently there is more hype than actual evidence of ‘all’ the health claims made by manufacturers, especially around weight loss. Although there is some noticeable benefits such as increase circulation and increased bone density from regular use.

All you have to do is stand there and vibrate away at whatever speed is comfortable for you. It is recommended to use it four to eight times a day for ten minutes at a time as a weight loss tool. I just use it twice, once at the beginning and once at the ending of my workout at the local YMCA.

To me it feels like I’m getting a full body massage. There are charts that come with these machines to show other positions that one can be in to target and improve different parts of one’s body. I haven’t explored anything past just standing in a few positions – legs straight, or legs bent, and a bit of twisting and holding my torso to one side or the other.

If I had the room and the money this would be the first piece of exercise equipment I would buy.

Have you tried Vibration Machines? What is your experience of them? Post your comments in the box below.
