Group Travel vs. Solo Travel

A small comparison between group travel and solo travel for Baby-Boomers.

Group Travel

This is where two or more people are involved. A Group can be made up of family members, friends, classmates, members of a social group, or total strangers.

Many tours, attractions and accommodations offer group rates, which may make your trip more affordable.

Sometimes it is safer to stay in groups, especially in some foreign countries where there are language barriers, or safety issues.

One does not always have to stay with the group, and you can take a break for a few hours and do some sightseeing on your own at your destination.

Solo Travel

Going by one’s self can be an adventure all on its own. There is an opportunity for one to self-reflect while journeying without the distraction of others around. It can also be a chance to see what you are made of in a time of crisis and have to reach out to total strangers along the way.

Before you set out on your adventure it’s necessary to do a certain amount of research – especially if one is going overseas. Check flight and accommodation information, check cultural norms and possibly learn a few helpful phrases in the local language.

Always check several online sources for the best prices when researching and/or booking flights, accommodation, attractions, etc. It is also a good idea to read reviews regarding airlines, cruise lines, hotels/hostels and even destinations before making your final decision.

Don’t forget to read the fine print and check out policies and insurance for protection in case you need to cancel, and always buy travel & health insurance especially when leaving the country.

Plan, but don’t plan too much. Go where you want to go, not where others say you should go. If museums aren’t your thing, there’s no sense even going to the Louvre in Paris. I personally am a fan of architecture – not that I have ever studied it, and I couldn’t even name the period or the architect who influenced different structures, but I still love looking at it and taking pictures.

I think there is a time and a place for solo travel, and a time and a place for group travel. Pick what works best for you.
