Personality Styles of Baby-Boomers
Whether one is a Baby-Boomer, or not, one’s personality style is made up of several components such as traits and patterns of behaviour. “Personality includes attitudes, modes of thought, feelings, impulses, strivings, actions, and responses to opportunity and stress and everyday modes of interacting with others.” Generally, a person will fall somewhere on the Introversion/Extroversion scale and they will operate more predominantly from one sense: Intuition/Sensing, Feeling, or Thinking. As we are all very complex beings, generally one has aspects of several of these styles that make them unique and individual.
Personality style has been defined as “an individual’s relatively consistent inclinations and preferences across contexts” According to Dr. John Oldham and Lois B. Morris, from their book The New Personality Self-Portrait, “Your personality style is your organizing principle. It propels you on your life path. It is the distinctive pattern of your psychological functioning—the way you think, feel, and behave—that makes you definitely you.” No one has just one of these personality styles; we each are a composite of several personality styles. CyberSuitors lists personality style as one of the five areas of compatibility that is critical to the marital happiness of both genders.
While John Gray in his Men are From Mars, Women are From Venus series suggests that couples try to relate to one another in the style that their partner can understand, the reality for many people is, rightly or wrongly, that people tend to want their partner to express themselves in a style similar to their own. There are many Sensitive men who are in touch with their feelings, just as there are many women who are more intellectually inclined than the traditional touchy-feely, overly sensitive woman depicted in most books on relationships. Therefore, the Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus model is not necessarily the only model for relating to a member of the opposite sex.
In order to keep a relationship going, you have to spend quality time together. When and where does a couple spend their quality time? On the ball field? Or in the study? One can see how quickly the Adventurous one would be bored sitting in the study with their Solitary or Inventive partner discussing world events, or going to the art gallery with their Artistic partner. And again, each partner can participate in their particular interests—alone—but then where is the relationship?
Another great book for understanding yourself and your partner’s personality style is 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman.
