Dating During Festivities

There are many opportunities for festivities and celebrations throughout the year that a dating couple may participate in. A few types of festivities are feasts, celebrations and holidays.

Feasts

Feasts can range from simple to elaborate.

The couple may start their feasting by sharing a picnic in the park on a warm summer’s day. As their friendship and comfort level develops, the couple may opt to include others and join or invite friends to meet over a casual potluck meal during ‘the game.’ More formal feasting opportunities may be the office’s annual convention, or meeting the family for a holiday.

From casual to more formal settings generally also increases the focus on one’s attire.

For a picnic in the park, one can wear shorts or jeans and a t-shirt but it wouldn’t necessarily be appropriate to meet the family over dinner during Hanukkah in the same garb.

Celebrations

Again, celebrations can range from casual to more formal.

Canada Day or the Fourth of July celebrations are generally fairly casual events. These celebrations traditionally include family, friends and lots of food and fireworks. The couple can concentrate on their companionship and friendship, focusing on having fun without a lot of stress.

Other casual celebrations might be family birthdays. Whereas, a more formal celebration may be weddings and wedding anniversaries which generally, again, require more formal attire such as dress wear versus jeans and t-shirts.

The more formal the occasion, the greater the expectation on one’s partner to present a pleasing impression to one’s family, friends and possibly co-workers and bosses.

Holidays

Holidays also range from casual to more formal.

Casual or informal ‘holidays’ could be Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day, or St. Patrick’s Day. Seasonal holidays are generally considered casual holidays, including Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. None of these really warrant a day off.

More formal holidays such as New Year’s Day, and Christmas Day are generally observed with a day off at the National, Provincial or even Civic level.

Many formal holidays are religious holidays that are not observed by everyone and are mostly observed by those practicing those religions. There is generally a greater level of formality and tradition in religious holidays than in other holidays.

Religions such as Jewish, Muslim, Orthodox and Christians observe some of the more well-known holidays such as: Passover, Hanukkah, Prophet’s Birthday, Diwali, Rosh Hashana, and Ramadan.

Family Day is a relatively new Provincial Holiday among several Canadian provinces.

Each festive activity is another opportunity for companionship in the casual dating stage, and may lead the way to the more serious dating stage. (See my essay on Serious Dating here.)
