Famous RAW Foodists

The raw food lifestyle can be traced back to Switzerland and Germany during the early 1900s. Four famous RAW foodists I’d like to touch on are:

Ann Wigmore

Ann Wigmore was one of the earliest proponents of the RAW food movement in America during the early part of the twentieth century. She was the first person I read a book by who lived the RAW food lifestyle. The book was called The Hippocrates Diet And Health Program.

Her most widely known contribution to the RAW food movement was her promotion of drinking Wheatgrass juice as a way to detox from cooked and harmful foods. Ms. Wigmore believed that fresh wheatgrass juice and fresh vegetables – and especially chlorophyll – retained more of their original energy and potency if they were uncooked and eaten as soon as possible after harvesting them.

Gabriel Cousens

Gabriel Cousens is an American physician M.D., homeopath, and spiritual writer who practices holistic medicine. He advocates live food therapy for health and well-being. I came across Gabriel Cousens and related to his ‘live foods therapy,’ it just resonates with me.

Mr. Cousens runs “a holistic health, organic, veganic, live-food eco-spiritual community in Arizona to bring the total holistic, sustainability message as a living experience” at Tree Of Life Center in Arizona. I would love to go there and experience one of his health and wellness retreats!

Jon Gabriel

Although known more as a weight-loss guru, Jon Gabriel contends that most obese people feed their bodies with foods that are not rich in nutrients, which makes them eat more. Jon encourages a healthy lifestyle with lots of plant-based foods and juices along with his Gabriel Method program which also focuses on things like visualization and proper sleep to aid in weight loss. His book, The Gabriel Method made sense to me, plus he offers lots of free videos and meditations for his followers.

David ‘Avocado’ Wolfe

David Wolfe is probably the youngest RAW foodist I’m aware of. He started his RAW food path due in part to a dairy allergy he developed during his teens.  This led him to explore various diets and by the time he was 24 he was on an organic, raw food diet.

Wolfe runs several businesses related to the RAW food movement including raw chocolate products and supplements. He and his businesses have risen to a well-known status from endorsements by Woody Harrelson and Steve Jobs among others.
