Clothing for Baby-Boomers

I have been making my own clothing since I first took sewing in Home Ec. during high school. In the late ‘80s, I earned a diploma in fashion design where I learned Fashion Illustration, Pattern Making, Sewing on industrial sewing machines (very scary!!) and sergers, Fashion Merchandising, Fashion Show Production and Runway Modeling of our clothing. But for me, nothing beats comfort over style.

Having fibromyalgia, I am over-sensitive to almost everything: light, sound, and cold, I am also sensitive to fabrics against my skin. I tend to favour soft, silky fabrics.

Common Fabric Types Used In Clothing

Some natural fabrics are bamboo and hemp, cotton & linen, silk, and wool.

Natural fabrics tend to shrink when washed and wrinkle within minutes of wearing them, but they ‘breathe’ easier than synthetics. Natural fabrics also tend to absorb or wick moisture better than synthetics do.

Synthetics are polyester, taffeta, and spandex.

Synthetic fibres do not breathe very well therefore one can feel very hot and clammy and/or sticky in hot summer weather. Synthetic fabrics tend to be easy to wash and wear – rarely needing to be ironed.

“Holy Clothing, out of Niagara Falls, NY, has wonderful dresses, pants, tops and skirts made out of mostly natural fabric. The Holy Clothing website says that it takes “great pride in bringing you exclusive, handmade Dresses, Tops, & Skirts in Renaissance, Gypsy, Boho& Peasant Styles.”  Most of the garment descriptions say “Ethically Handmade in India by Holy Clothing.”

My daughter bought a dress for her wedding for under $100 through Holy Clothing.
