Abundant Living
In order to thrive, one must have ‘enough.’ Sometimes people think abundant living is having ‘more than enough,’ but my understanding is that it just means ‘plentiful, or over-sufficient,’ it doesn’t mean that one has to ‘have it all’ for themselves. Abundance is a lack of scarcity.
Abundance is having ‘enough’ of what you want for your comforts and happiness: enough money for healthful foods, comfortable clothing, affordable housing and transportation; enough health, money, time & energy for leisure activities, travel, and volunteerism.
In some ways, I think abundant living is more of a mindset than an actual tangible measurement.
The dictionary lists three types of abundance:
- Quantity or supply
- Heartfelt/fullness of heart, and
- Financial/wealth
Quantity of Items for Abundant Living
For most of my life, I’ve had a poverty mentality, and that is all that I saw, needless to say, I wasn’t living abundantly! Now I tend to look at life, specifically nature and see that there’s always ‘enough.’
The seasons cycle around and, from my point of view, I see that all the birds and animals, and plants and trees get enough sunshine, water and nutrients to blossom and thrive, so why shouldn’t I trust the process of life in order for me to blossom and thrive also?
If I am totally honest with myself, I find that there’s more than enough for me to live a good, quality, healthful – abundant life. I don’t need high fashion, designer clothes and shoes; I just need something that is comfortable against my skin. I don’t need expensive steak dinners in fancy restaurants; I just need good quality, nutritious foods which I especially prefer to make from scratch. Therefore, I feel I really am living an abundant life!!
For me, I feel so grateful and blessed to live in a part of the world where we have an abundance of hot, running water to have my morning shower. Now that is Abundant Living to me!!

Heartfelt Abundance
What exactly is heartfelt abundance? The dictionary describes it as an ‘overflowing fullness.’ I generally experience this when I come from a place of joyful gratitude or appreciation for all that I have in my life. It doesn’t mean that I have everything that I want, but it does mean that I appreciate what I already do have. And I really do believe that gratitude and appreciation are the way to create ‘more’ of whatever it is one wants in their life. It is said that, ‘what you focus on grows,’ so… do I focus on the lack in my life, complaining and wishing that it would change, and create more of the same, or do I focus on the abundance that I already have?
Today I choose to focus on the abundance that I already have: I have a lovely, bright, warm, above-ground, safe, affordable roof over my head; ‘enough’ money for good quality foods, clothing, and transportation; an amazing body that heals itself, that does so many functions without any effort or thought on my part; lots of loving, caring friends; a spiritual practice that feeds my soul and gives me peace and joy. I think I have lots to be grateful for and appreciative of!

Finances and/or Wealth
For some people, having enough could be living in a tent, or RV, and living on minimum wage, for others, abundant living means having enough to afford a 10,000-square-foot mansion and lavish consumption of foods and wines every night. So, what’s the difference? What is abundant living, and for whom?

I used to ‘want it all’ – to live a lavish abundant life, but I really don’t want to because I don’t like the ‘cost’ to maintain that lifestyle, not just the monetary cost, but the time-consuming costs – the cleaning, dusting, vacuuming, meal planning, and social planning.
Another aspect of wealth is the ability to enjoy abundance. To me, it’s all about one’s mindset, or having an attitude of gratitude and appreciation for all that one already has.
I think I’m happiest when I have a heartfelt attitude of gratitude and appreciation for the abundance that is all around me. I AM Living an Abundant Life; this is abundant living for me!
