As a result of regular, daily spiritual practices such as meditation, prayer, or gratitude – peace – a state of inner contentment or serenity – can lead to freedom from quarrels and disagreements, harmonious relationships with others and even lead to public safety and security including world peace.

 

Daily Spiritual Practices

 

Meditation

 

According to Wikipedia, Meditation can be defined as a practice where an individual focuses his or her mind on a particular object, thought or activity to achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm state…meditation is derived from the Latin meditatio, from a verb meditari, meaning “to think, contemplate, devise, or ponder.

To obtain peace, one must be willing to look at their life and circumstances from a new perspective. This can be done by reading, studying or contemplating a passage from any holy or spiritual book.

 

Prayer

 

There are many different ways to pray. Petitioning to God; supplication; thanksgiving; adoration, or confession – all are forms of prayer.

A prayer can have a formula or sequence of words such as in The Lord’s Prayer. The shortest and simplest prayer I know is uttering the word, “Help!”

 

  • A prayer can be anything intended with sincerity.
  • Prayer can be considered a ‘spiritual communion with God.’
  • Prayers can be practiced publicly or privately, either in silence or aloud.

 

Some religions and spiritual philosophies consider all thought as a form of prayer. Citing the biblical passage:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” ~ John 1:1

Throughout the book of Genesis are passages that say, “And God said…’ Some people suggest that this demonstrates the power of one’s word in the creation of their life circumstances.

Gratitude

 

Gratitude, or gratefulness; thankfulness and thanksgiving is a feeling of appreciation … The experience of gratitude has historically been a focus of several world religions.

According to Psychology Today, “Studies show that we can deliberately cultivate gratitude, and can increase our well-being and happiness by doing so.”

 


 

In the New Thought teachings, one gains a new perspective by recognizing their Oneness with All – God/Spirit/Creator; others and all living things, all things manifest – nature, the oceans, rivers, forests. When one sees themselves from this place of Oneness there is nothing to feel disturbed or perturbed about. One feels a sense of peace when they realize that there is nothing absent, that everything is in abundance; and there is no lack or limitation, nothing to want.

Through the Science of Mind teachings offered through the Centres for Spiritual Living I was taught a five-step prayer process called ‘Affirmative Prayer’ or Spiritual Mind Treatment which includes Gratitude as one of the steps. (You can read my essays about Spiritual Mind Treatment here.)

A website discussing bible verses says, “Thankfulness is a prominent Bible theme. First Thessalonians 5:16-18 says, “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” … Give thanks in all circumstances. Thankfulness should be a way of life for us, naturally flowing from our hearts and mouths.”

It goes on to say, “Giving thanks reminds us of how much we do have. We tend to focus on what we don’t have. By giving thanks continually we are reminded of how much we do have. When we focus on blessings rather than wants, we are happier. When we start thanking God for the things we usually take for granted, our perspective changes.”

I AM Grateful for…

 

Many days I look around my apartment at things to be grateful for:

  • electricity and all the appliances it runs;
  • abundance of hot & cold, clean running water;
  • my body functions –  digestion, assimilation & elimination;
  • my very breath
  • my bed and clothing
  • a fridge full of nutritious food

 

I can honestly say that gratitude keeps depression away; my faith, optimism and sense of peace has grown considerably the longer I practice gratitude.
