Laughter

They say that, ‘laughter is the best medicine.’

Benefits of Laughter

Whether self-directed, or medically directed, it has been demonstrated that laughter can relieve chronic pain, stress, hypertension and depression.

I remember reading about Norman Cousins who healed himself of chronic pain from a serious illness when he made a point of watching comedy movies daily. Another example is the true story of Patch Adams who was a doctor, a clown and a social activist, portrayed by Robin Williams in the movie of the same name. Dr. Adams believes that laughter, joy and creativity are necessary components for healing

In research studies, it has been shown that having a good chuckle reduces stress, hypertension, heart disease, and pain. Many hospitals are now offering laughter therapy as complimentary treatment to more traditional care for patients with cancer or other life-threatening conditions.

One cannot hold two opposing thoughts, or feelings at the same time, so when one is amused they are taking their mind of any problems they may be experiencing.

Thoughts create feelings which affect one’s emotional well-being. If one chooses to dwell on thoughts of loss or pain, then they will tend to feel depressed. Depression is one of the worst feelings or situations to be in. It can create a crippling spiral that is very difficult to get out of without professional intervention either through medication such as anti-depressants or professional counseling. Whereas changing ones thinking and mood by just turning on the TV to your favourite cable channel that has sit-coms, or subscribing to Netflix and ordering up your favourite comedic movie or series is much cheaper than these other options.

Humour isn’t just something for play time it is actually very beneficial – and could even be considered as a matter of life and death. Laughter has been scientifically shown to alleviate many health conditions from cancer to heart conditions and depression. Having a good chuckle even is a good form of pain relief without any nasty side effects that one may experience with traditional pain medication.

In this day and age, so many people are looking to alternative and less invasive methods of healing, whether a shy little titter, or a loud guffaw, not only is it healing for the participant, it is infectious and will bring smiles and giggles to those around you.
