Volunteerism for Baby-Boomers

As Baby-Boomers leave the workforce, they can sometimes feel that they’ve lost their life purpose. Volunteerism is a way to give meaning and purpose back into one’s life. Retired Baby-Boomers also have more time to give to any number of causes that are dear to their hearts. Here are just a few examples:

  • Being on a Board of Directors for any number of organizations
  • Building a Church or spiritual centre, school, hospital, etc.
  • Education, or ESL, or helping build schools in other countries
  • Elections – volunteering during an election campaign locally, nationally or internationally (going as a scrutineer or witness to ensure election laws and democracy is upheld)
  • Environmentalism – whether picking up garbage in one’s community or blocking harmful construction, or planting trees in India
  • Re-building a city, town, or country after a natural disaster such as flooding, hurricanes, or forest fires
  • Recreational sports teams – as referees, timekeepers, or coaches

Volunteerism is the act or practice of doing volunteer work in community service. According to Wikipedia, “Volunteering is generally considered an altruistic activity where an individual or group provides services for no financial gain to benefit another person, group or organization.”

Volunteerism is often used to improve human quality of life. Many volunteers are specifically trained in the areas they work, such as medicine, education, building or emergency rescue. Others serve on an as-needed basis, such as in response to a natural disaster.

Volunteering may have positive benefits for the volunteer as well as for the person or community served.
