Book Review – The Overeater’s Journal
Debbie Danowski’s book, The Overeater’s Journal: Exercises for the Heart, Mind & Soul is not just a book to read; it is a tool for becoming aware of one’s own reasons and triggers around food & emotional eating. Ms. Danowski was once over 300 lbs. and has managed to release the excess weight and keep it off for decades.
Each day begins with an introduction followed by journal prompts which ask 3 – 4 questions for you to explore the daily concept more in-depth to your own experience.
In the book, Ms. Danowski also offers suggestions for taking control of one’s life around food. First off, by becoming conscious and aware of what’s really in your food, followed by making a plan for better food choices and alternative behaviours to avoid emotional eating: find a friend to talk to, go for a walk, etc.
If one is rigorously honest with themselves throughout this process, one can gain a lot of insight and tools to recover from food addiction.
I highly recommend it.
